Slow down!

Given I drive professionally, it isn't unusual for me to notice more about motorist "road behaviour" than those who do not drive for a living. For instance, the other day while travelling on a major highway, it started raining heavily. Within minutes the highway became soaked and slick. Instinctively, I reduced my rate of speed to adjust to road conditions and remained in the right-hand (slower) lane of traffic.

I noticed a few other vehicles both in front and behind me who were wise enough to do the same - reduce their speed and adjust to current road conditions. However, there were many more vehicles flying by in the passing lane than were in the slower one!

This is very scary when you really think about it. Do these drivers not realize that one wrong move at the wheel will send them hydro-planing uncontrollably all over the highway on rain-drenched surfaces? Have they any concerns for those they are putting at risk with their contemptuous attitude?

Road conditions must always dictate driving rationality. There are no two-ways about it. Whether the roads are drenched with rain, snow-covered, slippery, patched with black ice... drivers need to reduce their rate of speed!

What confident these speedsters must have in their driving ability and their vehicles. I will be the first to admit I hold my breath when I see an older vehicle wiz by doing 10-30 kilometers more than I am on an slick road. I simply cringe and pray that drivers such as these do not cause an accident that is likely to involve me or others.

I only wish drivers out there would be more safety-conscious than they appear to be. Slow down if road conditons change. Think of others sharing the roadway with you. Perhaps one of those other drivers is a loved one; a son/daughter, parent, spouse. Are you willing to put them in jeopardy? I certainly hope not!
