Racing to RED!

Why do drivers speed up to pass others only to find themselves side-by-side at the same red light? Whether on a major roadway or in a residential area, I don't think I've missed a single day of driving without seeing someone do this. But, what's the point??

Granted, there are some circumstances when passing is necessary. For example; a disabled vehicle, driver pulled over toward the shoulder or slow moving vehicle. But, just for the sake of 'getting ahead' of the vehicle in front of you, is simply unjustifiable.

Passing in a vehicle is an undertaking that requires skill and precision to complete, regardless of what speed the action is achieved in. And it is even more dangerous if done without signaling the intent first!

The same can be said for drivers on a two-lane roadway who pass one and other to ensure they are FIRST in a particular lane at an intersection! Most drivers who do this rarely (if ever) use a signal light to show their intent or even bother to check their blind spot before switching lanes. You would not believe how many times I've had to slam on my brakes because some 'jerk' decided he wanted to be ahead of me in my lane instead of behind someone else in another!

It's sad to see so many people actually driving without consideration for others and in such an unsafe manner. Suffice it to say, however, some measure of satisfaction is derived when a driver who passes without good reason, finds himself at the same RED LIGHT along side me... That's when I smile!
